Eligibility Criteria
A student is eligible to join the course if they have completed a course equivalent to 10+2 or pre-university in any group with an overall grade point average of 50%, including languages.
Program Overview
The Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration is a comprehensive 3-year (6 semester) programme offered under the University of Madras. This program is designed to cultivate a profound interest in the field of criminology and criminal justice, providing students with a versatile education in key criminological concepts, principles, and theories.
The curriculum is structured to provide a well-rounded knowledge base and the essential skills for navigating the field of criminology. Through this programme, students will:
- Gain insight into the nature and impact of both conventional and emerging forms of crime.
- Develop critical thinking skills crucial for understanding a wide range of criminal behaviours and their societal implications, enabling learners to tackle challenges within the criminal justice system.
- Learn effective approaches for managing diverse criminal behaviours.
- Prepare for advanced studies in criminology, related disciplines, and interdisciplinary areas.
Program Education Outcomes
- The graduates will be able to specialize in the field of criminology, criminal justice, penology, victimology, and juvenile justice, and attain the muti-disciplinary approach of the discipline while dealing with various social problems.
- The students along with the theoretical knowledge would also develop skills in investigations and scientific interrogation of various forms of offences, deviance, or delinquency that they will have to deal in their prospective workplaces like the criminal justice system and other government organizations, non-government organizations, victim support organizations, private detective, corporate security, and loss prevention services.
- The academic erudition of the graduates will enable them to contribute to the inclusive changes sought by the developing society through research and bridge the gap between the society and the various dynamics of the criminal justice system.
Program Specific Outcomes
- Demonstrate a systematic or coherent understanding of the fundamental concepts and principles in the field of Criminology and its different subfields – penology, victimology, psychology of crime, sociology of crime and so on.
- Procedural knowledge that creates professionals in the field of Criminology for teaching, research and development and to work as professionals in the field of security services industry, victim assistance organizations, non-governmental organizations, juvenile justice system, correctional system, policing, and crime analysis.
- Develop knowledge and skills relevant to academia and industry that enable graduates of Criminology to undertake further studies in Criminology or in a related industry.
- Undertake field work and practical activities that develop problem-solving abilities required for a successful career in research, teaching, policy-making, security services management, private investigation, disaster management, non-governmental organizations, victim assistance organizations, correctional institutions, criminal and juvenile justice institutions etc.
