HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of B.A. Defence and Strategic Studies was initiated in the academic year 2019. The department was started keeping in mind the importance of security studies. Security has become an imperative need in
today’s global security scenario. What constitutes ‘Security’, awareness is indispensable. The present generation and millennials need to understand security and be well informed about keeping in mind the national interest as
well.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The Bachelor of Arts in Defence and Strategic Studies is a 3 year (6 Semester) regular programme offered under the University of Madras. The study is interdisciplinary and as such encompasses aspects like geopolitics and military
geography, science and technology, defence economics, conflict management and conflict resolution. Defence and Strategic Studies is a multifaceted academic major in which students learn to holistically frame complex strategic problems, develop viable and innovative solutions, and communicate effectively to multiple audiences. It educates future leaders to solve complex problems in an uncertain world.
This course helps applicants to gather focused military education, mainly on historical and geographical areas.
B.A. Defence and Strategic Studies is a discipline which covers all strategic as well as domestic issues that influence the security or defence of the country.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
A student is eligible to join the course if they have completed a course equivalent to 10+2, or pre-university in any group with an overall grade point average of 50%, including languages.
VISION
The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies aims to build the capacity of younger generation in the field of national security through critical analyses, thereby creating security awareness.
The department aspires to serve as a platform for creating leaders and scholars by studying national interests pertaining to India and global strategic culture.
MISSION
The Department of Defence and Strategic Studies is committed to develop a strong interdisciplinary study. The department aims to grow exponentially in generating defence based knowledge and national security.
PROGRAM OUTCOMES
Students should have gained a foundational understanding of strategic affairs, in various aspects of interstate and international security.
Understand multiple dimension of national security challenges faced by
India Gain theoretical knowledge and policy analysis skills Pursue careers in teaching, think tanks, and research organisations and in the private sectors.
Student will also be in higher education and can sit for competitive exams like civil services and Armed forces.
