Shri. Mohanmullji Chordia a very successful business man and a Philanthropist is the founder who established Agurchand Manmull Jain College in memory of his beloved father in the year 1952 at the Jain Boarding Home, T. At the very commencement itself the College had Pre-University Course in Commerce and one section of B. Com.

The College is affiliated to the University of Madras and the Department of Commerce is a premier department offering B.Com. course of the University of Madras. The courses by the Department are offered basically to students of the Jain community and also to students from under privileged sections of the society.

The Department of Commerce has a rich tradition with outstanding Professors who were stalwarts in the field of Commerce education.

The founder Head of the Department was veteran Professor V.V. Raman who contributed immensely to the growth and reputation of the department. He subsequently became the Principal of the College .

His successor was another outstanding Commerce Professor Sri M.S.Balasubramanian who by his rich knowledge and expertise carved a niche for the department among other departments of commerce in the city colleges. He was also responsible for introducing the M.Com course, thereby elevating the department to a post graduate department.

Many faculty members of the department have become Principals of the College. Some of our faculty members in the past and present have been conveners and members of academic bodies in the University of Madras and other autonomous Colleges in the State.

Most of our students including first generation learners have become successful entrepreneurs and most sort after professionals in the field of commerce.

The focus on high quality education, dedication and zeal of the Commerce department attracted a large number of students and created a growing demand for B.Com and M.Com courses .This led to having 3 sections for course in the department . In all these years demand outstripped supply by atleast 10 times .

Eight new faculty members were recruited in the academic year 2017-2018.

The department shifted from Room No. F-21 in the Main Building to Staff Room No 1 in New Kumbhat Block during 2018.
