History of the Department:
The Department of English (Shift II) was established in the year 1972. Since its inception, the
Department has played an active role in educating, empowering, and enhancing the language skills of
first-generation learners and students from semi-urban and rural pockets of the country.
Course Highlights:
The Department has a dynamic pedagogy that caters to the specific needs of students belonging to arts, science, commerce, and management streams of the college. The Department endeavours to hone in students the four fundamental skills of language learning such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing by encouraging active interaction and classroom participation. Expositions, film screenings, reviewing books/films, and creative writing form part of the pedagogy. For first-year undergraduates, the emphasis is placed on acquiring communicative capability and professional competence so that they can hold their own when they join the workforce. To this end, the students are encouraged to participate in group discussions and debates, deliver oral presentations, do innovative projects, script and perform skits etc. For sophomores, the Department facilitates language acquisition and
interpretation through literature. They are conscientised about the power of literature to open new perspectives on the world. Major literary forms such as poetry, essay, novel, short story, drama, and nonfiction constitute the curriculum. The students are trained in sharpening the skills of imaginative writing, technical writing, translation, and so on.
